| CHAIRPERSON'S
MESSAGE
Let me thank all those people who have subscribed to a monthly standing order with us. No matter how much or how little you have committed to, be assured that it does make a difference to an animal's life. You are probably aware that we have an animal sanctuary in Killimor, Co Galway, which makes heavy demands upon the organisation. Although staffed by Community Employment Scheme workers, every other expense has to be met by us from fund-raising efforts. The costs involved in running an animal welfare charity are huge. Mortgage payments, insurance payments, veterinary bills, phone bills, fuel and petrol bills, foodstuffs and administration expenses are only some of the commitments that we have to meet every month. Although we are a registered charity, we receive no regular Government funding. Each December we usually receive a payment from the Department of Agriculture, and if we are lucky, we may receive a small sum from Galway Corporation and Galway County Council. To date we have received nothing from Galway Corporation. Anyone that would like to contribute can do so by crediting our Account at any branch of the Bank of Ireland Account: 53593129We can now offer corporate tax relief to companies wishing to make donations to us. Dates for your Diary: Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December: Church Gate Collections. Every year we are allowed to collect outside any church in Galway City or county. We always welcome extra staff for this fund-raising venture, so if you can spare time to collect from your local church or any church, please phone our office to make the arrangements. This is a major weekend for us, and the more people we have on the ground the more money we can collect.
If you can offer an animal a home, permanent, temporary or foster, we need to hear from you. You can make a huge difference to an animal's life by simply offering your time and love. Check
out our popular re-homing pages for dogs
and cats looking for homes.

If
you would like to run any kind of fund-raising event on our behalf, we
will row in behind you and help in any way we can. Coffee mornings,
sponsored walks and such like are always good fun and help keep up the
profile of the organisation, as well as raising much-needed funds. Again,
please let us know the details first in order that we can become involved.
The purpose of the G.S.P.C.A. is to prevent animal cruelty and to promote animal welfare. To this end, we will highlight different cases to help you to appreciate the kind of work we are involved in. We do not just deal with cats and dogs, as is commonly believed, but with wild and farm animals too. Over the years, we have rescued horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, swans, seals, terrapins, rabbits, foxes, pigeons and budgies. If you see or hear of any animal cruelty, it is your duty to report it to either the G.S.P.C.A. or to the Gardaí. Animal abuse is a crime, there are laws to protect animals, and if we fail to report neglect and cruelty, we are failing the very animals we set out to protect. All reports are dealt with confidentially, but we do not deal with anonymous calls - be assured that your personal details will always be kept secret. Christmas is a time of year when lots of circuses come to Galway. The G.S.P.C.A. policy on circuses is quite clear; we do not support any circus that uses animals for entertainment. Elephants, large cats and primates were not put on this earth to be kept in intolerable conditions 23 hours out of 24, and to be dragged around the world outside of their natural environment, just to get a few laughs from the public. Non-animal circuses are far more popular, more entertaining and more ethical. Therefore, we would ask you to vote with your feet and boycott circuses that bring animals to Galway. Please sign our petition in the shop against animal circuses. I know you are keen to learn of some of our cruelty cases, our successes and our everyday work. With this in mind, we will tell you about a few of the animals that come into our care in our success stories pages.
See the Success Stories page for Pilgrim's story Greyhounds make fantastic pets, are wonderful with children and are gentle creatures who require very little walking. Yet, they suffer a terrible press and a worse fate if they are racing greyhounds. Many of Ireland's racing greyhounds are sold abroad to countries like Spain, where they are literally raced to death. The ISPCA has video footage of Irish greyhounds being raced with broken legs and in advanced stages of malnutrition. For
this reason, please do not support this industry by attending fund-raising
race nights or such like. It is totally unethical for any animal to suffer
to raise funds for another charity.
